Episode Summary

AUNTIE: Wa’tkwanonhweráton. Greetings, love, and respect from me to all of you. It’s Ohseráse – the New Year and we are setting the tone of skénnen - of peace - and the way we fulfill our responsibilities in this episode as we visit with singer Bear Fox - from our Kanyenkehà:ka territory of Akwesasne. Long before I met Bear Fox she was influencing me with the song you are listening to right now – which is our primary Rotinonhsyón:ni ceremony – the Ohénton Karihwatehkwen – where we give thanks to the natural world. (song) Countless people have learned this ceremony and key aspects of our Mohawk language because of this song. BEAR FOX: Even though I don’t know our whole language fluently, I feel like my gift is to make the songs for everyone to learn or the kids. Especially the kids. The language will be in the songs and then that will be carried on that way. And in that way I am helping. AUNTIE: Bear Fox is the recipient of multiple Native American Music awards including best new artist and best song writer. She she’s put out 11 albums – some are solo and some with her Akwesasne womens singing group Kontiwennenhawi – which means they carry the words. Her songs are featured in the Amazon Prime series Three Pines, on the Disney Plus series called What if…, in the Good Mind documentary and her Women’s Power Song will be featured in the upcoming Red Fever Documentary. In our visit we talk about where Bear Fox’s receives inspiration for her prolific songwriting. BEAR FOX: When I am on the water – you know the peacefulness on the water I think I have to have skénnen and then I am able to receive a song or a message. AUNTIE: I’m Kahstoserakwathe and we are Yéthi Nihsténha ne Tekarónyakénare. The Aunties Dandelion. We’re focused on revitalizing our communities through stories of land, language, and relationships.
